After years of fundraising, awareness campaigns, and ifs and buts, Diamer-Bhasha Dam has finally reached a point where actual work can begin. The PM was told that the mega hydel-power project has entered the phase of actual construction and all prep work has been completed.
The dam is said to:
- create over 16000 jobs
- generate 4500 MW electric power
- irrigate around 1.2 million acres agricultural land
- extend the life of Tarbela Dam by 35 years
In July 2018, the PM-CJP fund for the Diamer-Bhasha dam was established. The fund got international attention when overseas Pakistanis started pouring in money into it. The previous Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, vowed to make it the mission of his life to keep the fund going. However, like the usual norm, promises made and promises broken. The fund currently holds around PKR 12 billion, out of the approximated construction cost of PKR 1200 billion. Let us all hope the remaining 99% of the cost would come from more reliable means.
